Quilt Block series: FARMER’S FRIEND with Johanna Masko
The Farmer’s Friend block is a great design to learn TWO time-saving construction techniques! We will create Half Square Triangle units (a VERY common element in quilt blocks) as well as use “strip-piecing” to really move your projects forward quickly. Get comfortable with these foundational quilting skills while making this striking beginner-friendly quilt block.
Measurements are given for a 12” finished block PLUS a bonus 6” mini version.
We will practice the following skills in this block:
- How to measure, cut, and stitch Half Square Triangle units (HSTs)
- The why and how of “strip-piecing”
- Fun alternate block layouts that use identical units
- Best techniques for using a rotary cutter, ruler and mat
- The importance of “alignment” and effective pinning
- Working with a 1/4” seam allowance
- Proper pressing technique
Supplies:
0.25m (or Fat Quarter) of a “light” colour, 100% cotton quilting fabric
0.25m (or Fat Quarter) of a “medium” colour, 100% cotton quilting fabric
0.25m (or Fat Quarter) of a “dark” colour, 100% cotton quilting fabric
All purpose thread for sewing machine (Gütermann, Mettler or Coats)
45mm rotary cutter and cutting mat
Gridded acrylic ruler- 6 x 12” or a square ruler 9.5” or larger
