Quilt Block series: Block 2
ECONOMY with Johanna Masko
More Quilt Block Basics
DATE: Tuesday July 8th
TIME: 6pm-9pm
The Economy block is a patchwork classic and is one of my favourite block designs! We will learn how to handle stretchy edges with ease while making this lovely block.
Measurements are given for a 12” finished block PLUS a bonus 6” mini version.
We will practice the following skills in this block:
- Working with shapes cut “on the bias”
- Tips for stitching patches together with seam ends that don’t align
- Correct use of a rotary cutter, ruler and mat
- Accurate cutting
- The importance of “alignment” and how to pin effectively
- Working with a 1/4” seam allowance
- Proper pressing technique
- A review of “straight of grain,” “crossgrain” and “bias”
Supplies:
- 0.25m (or Fat Quarter) EACH of 3 different, 100% cotton quilting fabrics. They shouldn’t be too “blendy.” Make sure if you set them next to each other that you can clearly see the different fabrics distinctly, either by way of colour and/or contrast. If using a mix of prints, try choosing prints with motifs that vary in size.
- All purpose thread for sewing machine (Gütermann, Mettler or Coats)
- 45mm rotary cutter and cutting mat
- Gridded acrylic ruler, 6 x 12” or 6 x 24” or a square ruler 9.5” or larger
- Scissors
- Pins
- Sewing machine, iron and ironing surface
